Home City, ST

THE NEXT STOP ON THE CoServ on the Road Tour 2024 is Sanger. Founded in 1886 by the railroad, the history of this town goes back more than a century, and city officials proclaim it the official Gateway to the Metroplex. Known for its small-town charm, Sanger boasts one-of-a-kind tourist destinations while promising to deliver many more. Every time I drive by the now-shuttered Johnie's, I lament that I'll never get to stop in for a slice of pie.

He was just entertaining a deranged fantasy about how he would piss his money away if he were rich. But the discovery that this chain I had almost completely forgotten had a second life somewhere fascinated me. So down the rabbit hole I went, investigating the ghosts of lesser-known American fast food chains and where and whether you could still find them.

LA's Vintage Diners, Then And Now

Both bone-in and boneless chicken are on the menu, which are both available with sauce options including soy, hot chili, and hot spicy. Pickled radishes are also served on the side, giving a light crispy bite to counteract the rich, juicy chicken. There’s no way the chicken chain founded by country legend Kenny Rogers still exists, but I Googled it anyway, because sometimes my cousin tells whatever you call a not-lie. It is totally gone in America — the last one was in San Bernardino County and it closed in 2011— but there are tons of them in Malaysia. My cousin had no intention of going to Malaysia, of course.

Nick's Cafe

The ads were awful because all 1970s fast food ads were awful. Yet because of their age, low budget and ephemeral nature, they’ve become otherworldly, as if taking place in purgatory. A savage journey to the heart of the greasy-as-hell, California fast food dream. 2024 All Season Dining Plans are valid any public operating day during the remainder of the 2024 season. An All Season Dining Plan added to a Season Pass is only valid for redemption exclusively by the registered passholder.

The chicken is available country style with no heat all the way up to howlin’ which borders on painful to eat. Los Angeles may not be an ephemeral city, but it’s certainly the capital of ephemera. It’s terrible at holding on to its history, and punitive rent prices make it difficult to achieve any sense of consistency. Local institutions are routinely going out of business, and there’s always a sense that the places you like the most could just die out of nowhere one day, crushed under the uncaring boot of late capitalism. Pioneer Chicken is an endangered fast-food species and deserves our love and preservation.

According to my mom, who ate there all the time, this shit was the kind of bad for you that drives you crazy with desire if you had it routinely and then never again. The sort of thing you’d move heaven and earth to have again, knowing full well it’s not the best, just something that can take you back in time. Indonesia is where Pioneer Chicken still soldiers on, 8,000 miles from where it started. The more important thing I learned is that there are two Pioneer Chickens left in Los Angeles, each stubbornly surviving for decades longer than all others. One is in Boyle Heights and the other’s in Bell Gardens.

Coffee Shop

A museum located on the south end of the downtown square, open every Saturday. For those who love history, the Sanger Area Historical Society is open every Saturday. They keep history alive; it is a great way to learn how the earliest settlers lived. If you enjoy outdoor activities such as wakeboarding, bass fishing, sailing, or hiking, Lake Ray Roberts is the perfect spot. Alternatively, if you’d like to slow down and do some volunteering, the Born 2 Be Therapeutic Equestrian Center offers equine therapy for children and adults with disabilities. The Babe’s Chicken Dinner House in Granbury opened on June 18, 2007.

All Day Dining Guests with All Day Dining will receive a wristband at any participating location allowing them to enjoy one entrée and one side item every 90 minutes. Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner Restaurant now features a full service bar, serving signature boysenberry-infused cocktails. With décor that pays homage to the Garden Dining Room that preceded it, the bar is at once rustic and modern, and a great place to retire to after a day of fun in the park. At Tokyo Fried Chicken, the bird is offered by the piece, as well as in a bucket, as part of a sandwich, or in a combo box. In the box, the supremely crispy pieces are served alongside a choice of sides which include curry creamed corn, soy glazed yams, and creamy potato salad.

Once a Dining Plan is linked to a Season Pass, it is non-transferable. In order for benefits to be redeemed, the Season Pass must be used for admission on the same date. Yes, an All Season Dining Plan can be added to all Season Pass types, except Knott's Scary Farm Passes. The large dining room to the right of the entrance has been remodeled with a look inspired by Mrs. Knott’s kitchen pantry. Nods to Cordelia’s home kitchen, including a potbelly stove, rustic furnishings, and seating arrangements for large parties evoke themes of warmth, family, and togetherness.

All Season Dining All Season Dining will automatically be added to the guest’s season pass after purchase. Guests may present their season pass at any participating dining location to enjoy lunch and dinner each visit in 2024. There is a four-hour interval time between meals, with a maximum of two meals per day. The Korean fried chicken at Chimmelier is served in a few different forms on the menu. There’s a whole or half bird available if feeding a group, while an order of wings or chicken tenders is always a good option. For a spicy kick try the buldak chicken sandwich, which translates to fire chicken.

This decades-old New Orleans-leaning Valley restaurant turns out reliable fried chicken by the piece. Diners can also sort through Bayou staples like gumbo and jambalaya to find fried chicken po’ boys and more. Experience Babe’s Chicken in the comfort of your own space! It’s not just another meal…it’s comfort food right to your door. In a common, ambient way, Pioneer Chicken was central to the Los Angeles experience, the myth history of the town. It was everywhere, like orange street lights or jacaranda trees, a fixture of the landscape.
